We are delighted to share that Lenovo is the first sponsor of the inaugural meeting of the Singularity User Group (SUG) next month in San Diego. Singularity containers are a validated component of Lenovo Intelligent Computing Orchestration (LiCO), a software solution that simplifies the management and use of distributed clusters for High Performance Computing (HPC) workloads and Artificial Intelligence (AI) model development.

In LiCO, Singularity is employed as the runtime for packaging AI frameworks – both those supplied by Lenovo, as well as those developed by LiCO users or available elsewhere – e.g., via the NVIDIA GPU Cloud (NGC). As the LiCO name itself implies, HPC and AI workloads containerized via Singularity are orchestrated optimally in this integrated solution stack – a stack underpinned by Lenovo ThinkSystem servers that spans ultimately to the end user scientist or engineer.

At SUG, Lenovo’s senior AI software and solutions manager J.J. Falkanger will relate the flexibility LiCO delivers to HPC and Enterprise Performance Computing (EPC) users by providing an intuitive web-based interface for managing and deploying both AI and HPC workloads on the same cluster.  Built upon an OpenHPC management stack, LiCO enables even inexperienced users to utilize cluster resources, thanks to Singularity container management and job template integration.

Mobile and reproducible runtimes provided by Singularity containers, as a validated component of a flexible and accessible integrated solution stack, make for a compelling and enabling onramp for those who seek to focus on the pursuit of their HPC and/or AI R&D – as opposed to infrastructural details.

Along with a few colleagues from Lenovo, Falkanger will be available to discuss LiCO during the networking sessions at SUG – sessions that’ll provide attendees with the opportunity to follow up with presenters in a more focused and intimate setting. Lenovo will also have a presence in the exhibits area at SUG.

Brought to you by the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) and Sylabs, this inaugural meeting of SUG will take place March 12-13, 2019 in San Diego at the Center on the University of California San Diego (UCSD) Campus. Along with Falkanger from Lenovo, speakers from SDSC and Sylabs are featured in the technical program. However, the bulk of this program has been fleshed out with contributed talks from the Singularity user, developer, and provider community – in fact, the first five contributed talks have already been shared here.

Reception to Singularity has been nothing short of exceptional since it was first introduced in 2015, Lenovo’s sponsorship of SUG serves as a significant milestone in the ongoing adoption of Singularity – and in particular, adoption by those enterprise customers whose businesses depend upon compute-driven workloads. We sincerely hope that you’ll join Lenovo, SDSC, Sylabs, and the rest of the Singularity user, developer, and provider community at SUG next month in San Diego. As a final thought, we urge you not to wait until the last minute, as this is a limited space event, and registration is progressing rapidly.
